ABOUT JASON
---------------------------------------------
Born and raised in the suburbs of Nassau County, Long Island, this young songwriter, vocalist and guitarist, whose earliest musical memories include standing in his parents’ living room with a tennis racket in hand fashioned guitar-style, pretending to play along with his mother’s Bee Gees and Eddie and The Cruisers cassettes, has been building a name for himself in recent years as a nationally and internationally-touring singer/songwriter and bandleader, as well as sideman and session musician for some of music’s brightest up and coming artists, bands, writers and producers.
With an ear-catching, octave-leaping tenor voice and a background as a guitarist that included formative years being trained as a classical finger style player before graduating to the school of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and U2 as a teenager in the 90’s, Jason Liebman’s unique style as both a vocalist and instrumentalist has evolved through years of live performance, first as an elementary school student playing Mozart arranged for four guitars at his after school conservatory program, then at the Pennsylvania State University where Liebman founded his first original band, Windigo, and finally on the road between New York, California and Europe, logging enough touring miles to rival a long-haul trucker over the last few years.
“Like George Carlin says, ‘If you have a zip code, I’ll be there,’” says Liebman , acknowledging that, while his tour schedule over the past few years has featured the usual suspect big cities and college towns, there are also numerous stops in towns that would have most people asking, “you played where?!!” To this Jason responds, “I just want to play. I’ve worked extremely hard for a long time to get to the point where I feel confident that I have something unique and interesting to offer and I want to pursue every opportunity that I can to continue to cultivate an audience for myself.” Lucky for him, Jason’s “if you want me, I’ll play there” attitude has been paying big dividends.
With the release of his 2002 debut The Driest Of All Seasons, praised by Larry Flick of Billboard Magazine as “much deserving of major label attention,” as well as his 2004 follow-up, Escape From The Heart Of Darkness, Liebman established himself as a college and public radio favorite as his music was added to the rotation of over 400 stations. With strong word-of-mouth support and a two-show-per-day performance schedule that featured coffeehouse and in-store performances in the afternoons followed by bar and venue shows at night, Jason has been able to turn himself into a touring favorite for fans of all ages across the country and overseas.
In addition to his own music, Liebman also remains a highly regarded writing partner and in-demand session and touring vocalist, guitarist and bassist for a number of top-flight, Grammy-winning producers such as Narada Michael Walden (Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Whitney Houston) and high-profile, up and coming young artists and bands such RCA Records’ critical darling, Rachael Yamagata, as well as one of New York City’s most buzz worthy young bands, The Orion Experience.
“It sounds like a cliché, but the more I travel and perform and the more musicians I have an opportunity to work with, the more I understand that it’s not about where your career starts or where it ends. It’s not about any one gig or any two bands or your ten favorite road stories. It’s about the journey. It’s about the work you put in, the relationships you develop and the reputation you’re able to create and maintain. You do the work and you do it right and you hope that it continues to bring positive energy and good opportunities your way. I’m excited about where I’ve been and even more excited about where I’m headed.”
The sky seems the limit on that last point. With 2007 having already brought song placement of his fan favorite, “Wasted,” on Nickelodeon’s “iCarly” and MTV’s “Next,” as well as his standout original song, “Spark,” placed in the full-length feature film, “2 Minutes Later,” more TV and film placement is expected just around the corner, especially with Jason’s long-awaited follow-up to 2004’s Escape From The Heart Of Darkness, in the writing and pre-production stage. The as-yet-untitled album will be recorded and engineered by former Sony Studios senior engineer and producer, Andy Manganello, and will feature an all-star lineup of musicians that includes sax-man Jon Irabagon (Bright Eyes, Manhattan School of Music Orchestra), bassist Dan Carlisle (Rachael Yamagata, Baptized By Fire), drummer/percussionist Andrew Bain (Confluence, Jaqui Danqworth) and pianist and songwriter, Matt Kanelos.
With his unmatched work ethic and stellar resume as songwriter and collaborative musician, the name Jason Liebman is sure to be gracing the marquees of your favorite live music spot, pages of your favorite music publications and screens of your music-savvy friends and family members in the very near future. Keep an eye and ear out and don’t miss it!!!
